In the wake of the pandemic, the Department of Homeland Security has extended the deadline to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card to May 3, 2023.
"As our country continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, extending the REAL ID full enforcement deadline will give states time to reopen their driver's licensing operations and ensure their residents can obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card."
The initiative, which launched in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, is designed to increase security measures needed to fly on domestic, commercial flights and enter certain Federal facilities.
While most Americans may not frequent Federal facilities, the ability to pack their bags and take off toward their next adventure is a top priority for many travel-loving Americans. Without a REAL ID-compliant identification card, TSA will not permit you through airport security.
