Insider Tip: Review your cruise itinerary before you set sail to plan for day trips, special events and onboard activities.

Consider Travel Insurance

Travel insurance may not even cross your mind when planning an exciting getaway. Yet according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, it is something to consider. Depending on the policy, travel insurance offers protection from financial loss associated with unexpected illness, theft, accidents, trip cancellations and more. If you decide to purchase this insurance, be sure to have the required documents on hand, in case they’re needed.

Collect Your Travel Documents

Speaking of important documents, remember to have your passport or birth certificate on hand if your cruise includes stops in foreign countries or territories. Check which identification you’ll need and make two copies — one to keep with you in a safe place and one to leave at home.

Appropriate Cruise Attire

Many cruises feature a captain’s dinner the first night at sea. This special occasion provides an opportunity for the ship’s captain and senior officers to officially welcome, dine and mingle with passengers. It often requires elegant attire, which may range from cocktail dresses and suits to more formal gowns and tuxedos.

Pack Casual Items

Bring items ideal for everyday wear, including dining and social activities. Depending on the cruise, pack jeans, shorts, tees, sundresses, polos and collared shirts. Check with your Travel Services professional to see what’s appropriate for your particular getaway.

Don’t Forget Swimwear

For days lounging by the ship’s pool or a beach ashore, don’t forget your swimsuit and cover-up. Casual active wear such as comfy shorts, tops, socks and sneakers should always be top of mind, too, when going on a tour. And for chilly evenings strolling the deck, a cozy sweater or shawl is ideal.

Bring Proper Footwear

Whether gliding across the ship’s ballroom, conquering a port of call’s rugged terrain or hanging out in your room, complete with robe and favorite pair of fuzzy slippers, your feet will thank you for keeping them in mind.

Don A Stylish Hat

Hats come in handy when shielding your head and eyes from the midday sun. Plus, they look quite glamorous and dashing while out and about. Think: Casablanca and Indiana Jones.

Cooler Climate Wear

If your cruise is scheduled for late fall or winter or headed towards colder locales such as Canada or Norway, consider packing warmer items, too. Light layers of thermal clothing, fleece, waterproof and windproof jackets, warm socks, hats and gloves are suggested.

Insider Tip: An anti-wrinkle spray will come in handy to smooth out your day and evening outfits as needed.

Toiletries and Sundries

A benefit of cruising is the ability to bring full-size products. Pack according to your daily needs, including the aforementioned hair care, favorite body wash, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, razors and shaving cream as well as contact lens cleaner, case and a spare pair.

Skincare, makeup, aloe vera and sunscreen may be at the top of your essentials list, too. The same goes for prescription medications, vitamins and supplements. Have them on hand so you stay on schedule.

Insider Tip: Bring some Dramamine to prevent and combat seasickness along with natural remedies like ginger chews and peppermint gum.

High- and Low-Tech Gear

Along with your cell phone, laptop or tablet, don’t forget to bring a sturdy case, portable charger, headphones and power cord as needed. Binoculars and a camera with zoom lens are also recommended to capture the amazing moments sure to unfold. Consider a notebook to journal your travels and bookmark it with postcards or other mementos from your trip.

Laundry and Organizers

Many cruises have self-serve launderettes and full-service wash and press laundry. To keep your items sorted and organized, laundry bags are suggested. Bring a waterproof dry bag to the beach so you can take your valuables along with you without worrying about them getting wet.
